Clean Air + Transportation
We are calling for public fleets across Nevada to transition to zero-emission school buses, transit buses, and medium-and heavy-duty trucks that will clean up our air.
Every child deserves to breathe clean air. Yet in Nevada, 1 in 3 students rides a diesel school bus. Diesel tailpipe exhaust:
- Causes respiratory illness, heart disease and even cancer
- Worsens asthma attacks, the #1 chronic condition for children
- Leads children to miss more days of school and do worse on tests
Scientists have found that no amount of diesel exposure is safe for kids, whose lungs and brains are still developing.
There’s a solution: Electric school buses produce zero tailpipe emissions, reducing pollution and protecting children’s health.
Thanks to funding from the federal Clean Energy Plan, school districts in Clark, Washoe, Carson City, and other rural counties are investing in electric school buses. More funding is available now for schools, making electric school buses cheaper than diesel buses.
Chispa Nevada is calling on Nevada school districts to switch from dirty diesel to electric school buses, starting in the communities with the worst air quality.
Cleaner Buses, Healthier Futures
School districts across Nevada are investing millions of dollars in electric school buses to protect kids and our planet—thanks to the Federal Clean Energy Plan!
Our Clean Buses for Healthy Niños comité has been leading this campaign since 2016. Ways members of the comité take action:
Meeting with school district officials, like transportation/sustainability managers, school board trustees, and other key staff
Speak Up
Speaking with the media about the need to transition to electric school buses
Writing letters to key decision makers, sharing personal stories about how our families are impacted by asthma and other respiratory conditions
Testify
Testifying at PUC Consumer Sessions about how rate increases will impact them
Asking decision makers to pass policies and funding for electric school buses
Educating other community members about the dangers of diesel and how we can transition to a clean ride for kids
